With the enactment of the Physician Payments Sunshine Act of 2010, industry payments to physicians became transparent. Prior work by Moore et al., 2020 (@meregro) found that 39 plastic surgeons received over half of all industry payments to physicians in the specialty from 2013-2018. Kinsey Barhorst and her co-authors from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine (@ucincyplasticsurgery) further investigated these 39 surgeons and found that the cohort is predominantly male, in private practice, fellowship trained, with multiple societal memberships, a strong research presence, and active Instagram accounts. Given these are leaders in field, further research is necessary to investigate how industry influences physician choices for patient care, given the potential bias of large monetary incentives.
