Lower face contouring to achieve slimmer, less angular jawlines has become increasingly popular. While the traditional approach involves surgical resection of the mandible, nonsurgical approaches including masseter neurotoxin injections are now a temporary alternative to achieving a slimmer jawline. Jonlin Chen (@jonlinchen) and co-authors from the Johns Hopkins Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (@hopkinsplasticsurgery) evaluated layperson perceptions of patient attractiveness following lower face contouring using either surgical or nonsurgical treatment. They found in a survey of 418 respondents that surgical compared to nonsurgical jawline contouring offers greater improvements in perceptions of attractiveness and favorable personality traits, helping inform future surgeon-patient discussions.
