Plastic surgeons are commonly utilized to assist in closing spinal surgical defects. Many times this is done in a delayed fashion after the patients have complications from there prior surgery. Andrew McGregor @amcgregor6211 and co-authors performed a literature review and analysis of data from papers in regards to immediate plastic surgery closure versus delayed plastic surgery closure of spinal defects. A cost analysis was also performed to compare the cost of spinal surgical procedures and the cost of surgical site infection requiring spine surgery and plastic surgery closure. The authors found that infection, hardware loss, seroma, CSF leak, and reoperation were found to have a statistically significant higher rate in the delayed closure group versus the immediate group. Cost Analysis showed that there is a potenial for ,897 savings if a plastic surgeon is used upfront versus in a delayed fashion for spinal surgical site closure.
