Dedicated research year(s) have become a component of certain integrated plastic surgery programs for residents seeking to explore their research interests deeper during residency. Narain Reddy and his co-authors from the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago evaluated the long-term impact that taking zero, one, or two research years from a single program has on the productivity and career choices of former residents. He and his co-authors found that productivity is significantly greater as residents opt for multiple research years but did not find a significant difference among those opting for an academic versus non-academic career.
