With an increased focus on resource allocation within institutions, analyzing economic patterns is becoming an important addition to providing optimal care for patients. Pope Rodnoi @poperodnoi and his co-authors from the UTSW Department of Plastic Surgery examined the economic impact of ERAS Pathways in DIEP Flap Breast Reconstruction for the patient as well as their institution. He and his co-authors found that implementation of ERAS and continued improvements in ERAS resulted in significantly decreased costs for the patient and increased profitability for the institution. This study leads the way for further improvements in their ERAS protocols and gives a baseline for other academic institutions to implement and advance their ERAS protocols for institutional profitability, patient access to care, and improved outcomes.
