Collaboration Type: Job
Collaboration Title: Medical Student Research Fellowship
Date Available: July 1, 2023
Location: University of Virginia
Description: Under the direction of Patrick Cottler, Ph.D. and Brent DeGeorge, M.D., Ph.D., the University of Virginia's Plastic Surgery Research focuses on several applied and clinical research projects. Our basic science and translational research efforts focus on the development and utilization of pre-clinical models to support the investigation of therapeutic interventions and their clinical outcomes. Specifically, we have active work in wound healing, the biointegration and immunomodulation of biomaterials utilized in reconstructive applications, 3-D metal printing, and adipose grafting. The clinical research efforts are based on improving patient outcomes through generating and analyzing clinical data to determine and validate best practices in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Our culture values and rewards collaboration, resourcefulness, and the translation of basic science advances to achieve clinical impact and patient-centered outcomes. As such, we have designed robust collaborations with the Clinical Departments of Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Otolaryngology, and Dermatology as well as the Basic Science Departments of Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Chemistry, and Materials Science among others.
Ideal candidates will have wet lab research experience as well as understanding of clinical outcomes research, database management and how to navigate projects through IRB submission.

This is a one year funded opportunity.
