Tell me about yourself:
I am Ren Cai, a plastic surgeon and physician-scientist.

I finished my MBBS and MD training in clinical medicine in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery of Shanghai Ninth People’s Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University, School of Medicine. Nowadays, I am working as a clinical research fellow in the Bio-X Institute of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Why did you join the PSRC?
PSRC is a group that not only focuses on clinical practice but also basic science and translational medicine. As a plastic surgeon and physician-scientist, this is the group I want to join and make my contributions.

Tell me about your research?
My research is about the genetic study as well as precise medicine of Vascular Anomalies and Congenital Melanocytic Nevus. I hope patients of those diseases could get personalized treatment based on not only their clinicohitologic feature but also their position in the genetic framework.

What excites you most about your research?
The thrills came when I could tell my patients the prognosis of personalized therapy by their genotype, which was based on the data of my research, and finally, it came true. From the bench to the bedside!

What is your favorite thing about plastic surgery?
As a plastic surgeon, I could try my best to give my patients a normal life, always for the first time for them.

What advice would you give an aspiring plastic surgeon?
Try your best to discover the clinical puzzles and try your hardest to find out the truth in the lab. Sort out a solution on the bench and feedback at the bedside. It will make every day count!
